Plug and play hot tub

Plug and play hot tubs: connect without major works

A plug and play hot tub connects to a 16 amp electrical line, like a large household appliance, instead of needing a 25 or 32 amp supply run from the consumer unit. It is the simplest solution when the consumer unit is far away, when you rent, or when you want to avoid digging a trench across the garden.

In the North Wave range, four hot tubs come in a plug and play version. They are also the most compact, and that is no coincidence: a small volume of water takes less power to heat and to drive the massage.

Our advice

Simple does not mean any socket will do

A hot tub is still an appliance installed outdoors, in contact with water. It needs a dedicated line protected by a 30 mA residual current device, and never an extension lead or a multi-socket adaptor. An electrician can check the line in a single visit. The details are in our guide to electrical connection.

No load shedding

The heater does not switch off while the massage pump is running: there is no load shedding, and the water stays hot throughout your soak. What sets the plug and play version apart from the 25 A version is the equipment: one 3 HP massage pump instead of two on the Rødberg, Tønsberg and Sørrana, according to their specifications.

Rødberg, Tønsberg and Sørrana come in both versions

You choose between plug and play and 25 A when ordering: same shell, same number of seats. The Stølen, for its part, is designed for 16 A from the outset. Your dealer will tell you which version suits your installation.

Frequently asked questions

Can a plug and play hot tub be plugged into an ordinary socket?

It connects to a 16 A socket or line, but that line must be dedicated to the hot tub and protected by a 30 mA RCD. A patio socket already used for something else, or an extension lead, will not do.

Does a plug and play hot tub heat less well?

No. It heats with the same heater, and the heating does not switch off while the massage pump is running: there is no load shedding. With the cover closed, it holds the temperature you have chosen.

Which North Wave hot tubs are plug and play?

The Stølen (2 seats), the Rødberg and the Tønsberg (3 seats) and the Sørrana (5 seats). The last three also come in 25 A.

Do you need an electrician for a plug and play hot tub?

We always recommend one: they check that the line can take the hot tub, fit residual current protection if it is missing, and hand over a compliant installation. It is quick when the line already exists.
